Very Cool Electric Powerboat Record - 98+ MPH!
On October 12 2008, Michael Bontoft set a world record for an electric powered boat at 98.806 MPH! This is in a kneel-down outboard style hydroplane.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with straightaway records, two runs are made through a set course in opposite directions and the average time is calculated. The course was a kilometer long with room to get up to speed before hitting the timer.
From Mike: "It is a modified 48 volt brushed motor from a forklift used to power the hydraulics, rated at about 15hp.? We ran a Zilla speed control and put 140 volts and 700 amps to it from 42 Lithium Polymer batteries. Composite glass honeycomb boat I built."

Rookie driver Scott Liddycoat will be honored at the UIM Awards Giving Gala at the Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco for his victory at the 2011 Oryx Cup UIM World Championship in Qatar.

"I can't wait to represent the sport at this prestigious event in Monte Carlo," said Liddycoat, driver of the Valken.com boat. "Anyone I talk to, I want to share with them how great the sport is."
More than 80 world champions representing 25 countries are expected to attend the third annual UIM Awards Giving Gala. Not only does the event honor drivers who won UIM Powerboating World Championships in 2011, organizers will present the UIM Environmental Award and the Stefano Casiraghi Memorial Trophy.
"After attending the UIM meetings in Abu Dhabi and seeing firsthand the structure and importance of this worldwide organization, I feel it is important that H1 be represented and our UIM World Champion be recognized along with the other champions who will be in attendance," said Sam Cole, chairman of H1 Unlimited. "We do, after all, race some of the biggest, fastest boats in the Union Internationale Motonatique."
