Volunteers - Join Us To See The Detroit Fireworks

We're having a casual fireworks viewing from the Dodge Pits for the Detroit / Ford Fireworks on Monday June 23rd.

While we're a couple miles from the actual fireworks, it's a nice way to see the fireworks but not have to deal with the crowd or parking hassles.

This is a BYO event - bring your own food, drink, chairs, whatever you wish to have. UPDATE: A grill will be available!

The Pit Tower will be open for bathrooms and running water.

We'll start about 6pm though you can arrive any time after that too. The fireworks are scheduled for 10:06pm.

Team Porter will return to running two boats in the 2014 H1 Unlimited Championship Series, bringing the T-5 out of backup status to return to competition.

Cal Phipps has been named to drive the T-5 as Porter's 7 Graham Trucking.

Porter also said the team will run both boats for the full season, and an expanded crew will be shared between the two boats. Tom Anderson returns as crew chief of the 1 Graham Trucking, while Brooke Tyler IV moves from the deck of the 1 to become crew chief of the 7.

J. Michael Kelly also returns to the team this season, as driver of the 1 Graham Trucking (T-6).

Some Sad News - Mira Slovak

Hydroplane racing legend Mira Slovak passed away Monday June 16 at his home in Fallbrook, California.  He had been suffering from stomach cancer.  He was 84.

Beyond doubt, one of the most colorful characters ever to jockey an unlimited hydroplane was Mira Slovak, "The Flying Czech," who was to boat racing what Errol Flynn was to the movies.

During an unlimited career that lasted from 1956 to 1968, Miraslav J. Slovak was a competitive presence on the race course. He was national high point champion twice-in 1958 with Miss Bardahl and in 1966 with Tahoe Miss. And he won the 1966 APBA Gold Cup with Tahoe Miss.

When Mira arrived on the hydroplane scene in the middle 1950s, promoters of the sport were faced with a peculiar problem. Instead of having to invent an interesting background for a new participant, they had to present Slovak in a credible light. No APBA publicist-or Hollywood screenwriter-could have concocted a fictional script to match what Mira had actually done in the few years prior to his celebrated debut at the 1956 Seattle Seafair Regatta as rookie driver of Bill Boeing, Jr.'s Miss Wahoo.
